Early Discoveries and Naming
1996: Fossils of Megaraptor were discovered by Argentinian paleontologist Fernando Novas in the Portezuelo Formation, Patagonia, Argentina. The remains included a massive 15-inch claw initially thought to belong to the foot, resembling those of dromaeosaurids (raptors).
1998: Novas officially named the species Megaraptor namunhuaiquii. The species name comes from the Mapuche language, meaning “foot lance,” reflecting the initial misclassification of the claw as a foot weapon.
Refining Classification
2004: A more complete specimen revealed that the large claw was part of the hand, not the foot. This discovery changed its classification from a dromaeosaurid to a theropod with unique features.
Mid-2000s: Megaraptor was classified as a basal tetanuran within Allosauroidea (Neovenatoridae). Later studies debated its placement as either a basal coelurosaur or tyrannosauroid.
Evolutionary Insights
Early Cretaceous (~130–121 million years ago): The earliest megaraptorans, such as Fukuiraptor (Japan) and Phuwiangvenator (Thailand), evolved in Asia. This suggests an Asian origin for Megaraptora.
Mid-Cretaceous (~105–100 million years ago): Megaraptorans spread to Gondwana (Australia and South America) via Antarctica. Australian forms like Australovenator represent some of the earliest Gondwanan megaraptorids.
Late Cretaceous (~90–85 million years ago): Megaraptor thrived in South America, particularly in Patagonia, where it coexisted with other theropods and herbivorous dinosaurs. It likely became a dominant predator after the extinction of larger theropods like carcharodontosaurids.
Recent Discoveries
2018: A new South American megaraptoran species, Tratayenia rosalesi, was described. It demonstrated anatomical differences from Asian and Australian forms, reflecting regional adaptations.
2022: The largest known megaraptoran, Maip macrothorax, was discovered in Argentina. It measured approximately 10 meters long and lived near the end of the Cretaceous (~70 million years ago). This discovery highlighted the increasing size and robustness of South American megaraptorids.
2024: Large footprints discovered in China were attributed to a new megaraptoran species, Fujianipus yingliangi. This discovery expanded the known distribution of megaraptorans back into Asia.
